Diabetes Mellitus: Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that prevents the body to utilize glucose completely or partially . It is characterized by raised glucose concentration in the blood and alteration in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism. This can be due to failure in the formation of insulin/liberation or action. In type 1 diabetes also known as juvenile onset diabetes patients depend on insulin. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is also known as adult onset diabetes (non insulin dependent ). This form occurs mainly in adults and the person is usually overweight. Type 2 diabetes is associated with people who are obese or underactive . Obesity probably acts as a diabetogenic factor through increasing resistance to the action of insulin. People with a high waist /hip ratio have a greater risk of developing diabetes.
People with diabetes do not need to follow a “special diet” . Eating well is important for good diabetes control . Medical Nutrition Therapy is important in managing existing diabetes .Carbohydrate intake needs to be monitored , it is important to control the total amount of carbohydrate ,the source or type is less important. The timing of meal is important in people taking insulin. It is very important to control diabetes with drugs /insulin and Diet . Poorly controlled diabetes can have severe complications like: blindness, hypertension, kidney disease, foot problem/diabetic foot, vascular diseases.
